Prewrite

1. What are you good at? I am good at ping pong .
2. How do you feel when you're doing the thing you're good at? I feel really powerful when I play.
3. How would you feel if people wouldn't let you do the thing you're good at? I would feel annoyed if I couldn't play because I feel kinda relaxed when I play. And I'd still try to find a way to do it because that's how much I love it !!!
Chapter 1
1. What problems or conflicts are presented in chapter one? Tao needing to find a rabbit is an obvious one; identify at least two more (not having anything to do with the rabbit!).
2. Predict the resolution of each conflict.

Example:
sample conflict : Tao needs to find a rabbit.
sample predicted resolution: He will find the one he lost.

conflict 1: Tao was breaking a taboo by drawing.

1. Why wasn't the wolf eating? The wolf wasn't eating because he had a bone splinter stuck in his jaw.
2. What was the resolution of the wolf's problem? Tao was able to take out the bone.
2. Tao entered the slough. Why was this a good idea? This was a good idea because their might be food inside. Why might this be a bad idea? It was a bad idea because people say it s cursed with demons and evil spirits.

Nobody understands! They don't understand how hard it is for me. And now I have to worry about that boy, Tao. He wants to go hunt and get himself killed !? Fine... I'm not gonna stop him. If he's so sure that he can hunt, then go ahead. He's useless to me anyway. The only good thing is that maybe if he survives, we will have food and we don't have to risk the live of anyone else. That Tao make me so annoyed !!!
Chapter 4
In a good paragraph, describe Tao's mother. What are the qualities of her character? List 3 qualities. Find evidence in the chapter to support your ideas.
Tao's mother, Vedra, was a loving, brave, and creative mother. She wouldn't give him up even though he was a crippled child. That must mean that she really cares about Tao. She would make headbands and jewelery from scrap which means she was very creative. She went against the whole clan and her own husband insisting on keeping Tao no matter what people did telling us that she was very brave in order to protect her child.

1. Which two animals does Tao try to draw? Tao tries to draw a horse and the wolf dog, Ram.
2. Which is easier for him and why? Ram is easier for him because he has something to guide his eye instead of trying to come up with a picture from his mind

1. Graybeard realizes that Tao has broken two taboos of his clan. What are they? The two taboos were : 1. Tao was hunting with a wolf dog and 2. Tao was hunting in the Slough.
2. Which taboo doesn't he know about yet? That Tao was drawing in the cave.
3. Graybeard describes Volt differently than we have. What aspects of Volt's character is Graybeard acknowledging? He is acknowledging Volt's good side from he's own point of view.

Chapter 8
An important theme in this novel is that people should follow their dreams and do what they believe is right, even if they don't follow their society's expected ways. The author examines this theme in a stone age setting.

Imagine a similar situation today. Imagine a young person who wants to do something with their life that is different from what is normally expected in our society.
What situation did you imagine? Imagine if there was this girl who had a dream to become a pilot.

In the situation you imagined, should the person follow his or her dreams or should they follow society's expectations? Give your opinion.

Chapter 10
1. What are the "mountains-that-walk"? The "mountains-that walk" are mammoths.
2. What almost happened to Tao? Tao almost got trampled by one of the hurdling mammoths.

Chapter 11
Do you think Graybeard is a good teacher? Why? I think Graybeard was a good teacher because I think personally, I think in order to succeed you must be disiplined
Would you like to have been taught a skill by him? Why? I would have liked to been taught by Graybeard because he has experience.

Chapter 12
1. Name some of the ingredients used to make paint. Some of the ingredients include fish oil, limestone powder, charcoal dust. Which surprised you most? I think charcoal dust was the most surprising because that was used for bright colors. Don't you think charcoal dust would make the bright paint dark?
2. Why is Tao afraid at the end of the chapter? He was afraid Graybeard would get hurt and because he is old, Tao was afraid he might die.

Chapter 13
1. Even if Ram had succeeded in hunting the deer, do you think it was a good idea of Tao's to "show off" his dog's ability to hunt? Explain. I don't think it was a good idea to show off Ram because Volt might be expecting Ram to always hunt and/or catch something and get mad if he isn't always successful.
2. Predict what will happen next.

Chapter 14
1. Why does Tao cross the river? Tao had to because Ram was in trouble.
2. What decision does Graybeard reach? Greybeard decides to make Tao the new cave painter.

Chapter 15
What problem does Tao have by the end of the chapter? Tao is in the Secret Cavern and he is lost with no light.

Chapter 16

Chapter 17
Wow! What a chapter! What was your reaction? Tense? Surprised? You predicted it? Write a paragraph describing your reaction. OMG! That is a heck of a chapter. I mean after the way Volt had treated Tao, I would have never guessed that Volt would be Tao's father. It's hard to imagine that after all that cruelty, all that mistreatment, Volt is Tao's father. I wonder why Volt would keep such a big secret ???

Chapter 18
Why does Tao feel he needs to go to the Mountain People? He wanted to follow Greybeard and prove himself once again.
